How Do Our Turntables Achieve Such Accurate Speed Control?

Vinyl Life Blog How Do Our Turntables Achieve Such Accurate Speed Control?

All Pro-Ject Audio Systems DC turntables have fantastically accurate speed control. Accurate speed means your records sound like they're supposed to, keeping everything pitch-perfect (literally!). There are a number of ways to drive a turntable platter, and we've experimented and refined our designs for many years to ensure ours is the very best.

All of our turntables are belt-driven, where motor isolation is optimal. This, as opposed to direct-drive, leads to very low rumble and excellent playback performance.

There are some challenges in getting accurate playback speed from a turntable, be it on account of a poor power supply, a sluggish motor or simply the wrong platter drive scheme.

Our solution

Rather than using a DC motor, which is at the complete mercy of your selected power adapter, or an AC synchronous motor, which relies on the 50 Hz AC oscillation of your local power grid, we use internally regulated power. Just take a look at the quartz oscillator (C3) and series of integrated circuits (IC1-3) that work towards delivering an ideal analog sound (pictured below). This or similar circuitry is included in each of our DC turntables.

How it works

A Pro-Ject DC turntable receives power from a standard power supply and applies quartz-generated speed regulation to produce a sinusoidal AC power source in order to drive a synchronous AC motor. This way, the power used to govern your turntables speed is completely decoupled from mains interference. To sweeten the deal, microprocessor controlled feedback is used to ensure that your vinyl playback experience is pitch perfect.
